For The Love of Writing

By: Melissa Hoover

Whether it’s creative non-fiction or dragons and wizards from a secret abyss, writing takes you on a journey.

In writing you are transformed to a completely different world. Your environment quiets and slows to a drudging nonexistence, your cellphone is obsolete, and people slurping lattes nearby become an entertaining white noise of which is easily filtered. You’re alone with your characters and creating something that will captivate the imagination. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Ideas and beliefs are put into perspective and challenged. You are expected to know your content and command it like none other; other’s look to you as the expert on the subject. You have become the teacher while your readers are the students.

These highlights are well and fun; however, it is crucial to remember: to be good we must want to want. We must have an urge to soak up information and knowledge in all forms. Humility and a sense of humbleness are required because you will have to request to be taught. Writing isn’t entirely fun and games. It takes a determined mind, and a perseverance that will drive you batty. Yet, please remember, once accomplished, an immense feeling of endorphins and gratitude washes through you. And your nirvana has been reached while you lie on a cloud nine.

To write and to write well levels your skill with the greats. Your name is compared with the best of the best. Hemingway will offer a review of your story and perhaps scoff, but he at least knows you exist.

Writing challenges and torments; it creates and destroys; it opens and closes the mind to an idea. Writing, changes and moves the world.
