The Art of Creative Writing

By: Aaron Davis (Guest Writer)

Many people today want to be a writer, but were to start? Do you start with fiction, non-fiction, or poetry? Here’s a better question…what kind of writing? Well today I am going to give you all some tips on how to be an effective creative writer. This blog will contain a couple of tips and tricks that I use, that really help make my writing more dynamic and vibrant, and hopefully it will do the same for you.

The very first thing that I do before I write is find motivation. So, first tip for you guys is find motivation. Find that muse that can make you write for what seems like an eternity. Remember, motivation can come from anywhere, whether it’s taking a walk threw the woods, or finding a place to sit and watch people walk by, or maybe you find some inspiration in a movie, or a piece of art. Whatever it is, find inspiration before you write, readers can always tell when your writing seems dull and uninspired.

Next piece of advice for you guys is put a little bit of yourself in the work. Don’t just write something because you feel like you have to. Do it because you want to, and don’t be afraid to put a little bit of yourself into your writing. Give a little piece of your heart or soul to your audience. Not only will it make your writing seem more genuine, it will make your writing even more powerful and will keep readers coming back.

Third tip, detail…detail…detail. Like they say the devil is in the detail. Make sure you completely describe the action taking place and make sure to describe the scene as clearly as possible. Many writers today fell like they don’t know how to give that detail, or they feel like they are over doing it with there description. Here is a very easy and simple way to do it, use adjectives. As a creative writer adjectives are your friends, don’t be afraid to use them to help you. Also think of the scene as a painting. Either they detail on the painting will be clear or it will cloudy, a good artist can make the painting clear and easy to see, as a writer you want to paint that mental image in the readers head, and you want to make it as sharp and crisp as possible. Also try to stay away from the past tense as much as possible. Unless you are using a flashback, try to use those action verbs.

Finally guys, just have some fun. That is by far one of the most important things to remember when writing. If you’re not having fun, than you are not doing it right. Having fun is what will keep you from pulling your hair out, and having those long nights of pacing across the floor yelling at your blank word document to put some words one the screen. So remember have fun and try to keep a clear mind.

Well guys I hope this has been helpful. Remember those tips I gave you guys and you should be fine. Remember, find motivation, put a little bit of your self in the work, detail…detail...detail, and finally have fun. I hope that these tips help you guys create some really unique and enjoyable pieces for the future. I know for me they help a lot and hopefully I can write some more blogs for you guys in the future. Thanks and good luck on your writing.
